As you may have heard, many countries are enforcing sanctions against Russian officials, who have close ties to the Russian President. One of those sanctions was imposed by the United Kingdom against Gennady Timchenko, who happens to be the Board of Directors Chairman for the KHL.
You can also add the NHL to the list of those who have cut all ties with the KHL and Russia. And with all the imposed sanctions, it is taking its toll on the KHL.
The struggles are becoming so real that even Ak Bars Kazan, who are one of the wealthier teams is having to take some extreme measures to ensure they're KHL Club remains next season.
Clubs in the KHL are increasingly trying to cut costs. Ak Bars Kazan is one of the richer clubs in the league, and a key player when it comes to developing players.
They are about to close down their farm team in the VHL. I expect more teams to follow.
The club has denied this claim, but there are already multiple reports of team's looking to remove NHL drafted prospects to new markets to help continue their development.
This is developing story that we will continue to monitor as more information becomes available.
