Kyle Dubas on the verge of losing his job
In the last 25 years the Toronto Maple Leafs have had 7 different General Managers. Of those 7 men, 6 have seen stints of less than 4 years in Toronto. The 7th, Kyle Dubas is entering his 5th season with the club, making him the longest tenured GM over that time.
Now it seems though that Kyle Dubas, now more than ever is on the verge of losing his job. After 4 consecutive 1st round exits under his eye, it appears Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment is finally ready to pull the plug on the Dubas Era.
According to Jonas Seigel of The Athletic there have been ZERO conversations between Dubas and the Maple Leafs in terms of an extension.
But that puts Kyle Dubas and the Maple Leafs in an awkward situation. Will Kyle Dubas go into the season doing everything possible to try and save his job? Or will he stick to the plan that he clearly believes in and has worked during the regular season.
The team that Dubas put together last regular season was by far the best in franchise history. The 2021-22 Leafs piled up 115 points 10 points more than the previous franchise record-holder from the 2017-18 season. That team lost in the first round of the playoffs again, but by a goal in Game 7 to the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions.
Dubas' last two regular-season teams rank first and second in franchise history by points percentage.
But this summer Dubas bet big on a tandem of Matt Murray and Ilya Samsonov in goal and again quadrupled down on his Core Four. If the Maple Leafs don't get out of the first round, it will likely mark the end for Dubas, the Core Four and maybe even Brendan Shanahan.
