Matt Murray saved the Senators and allowed them to acquire Alex DeBrincat
The Ottawa Senators surprised everyone when they were able to acquire Alex DeBrincat in exchange for their 7th overall pick, 2nd round pick and a 3rd round pick.
But that deal almost didn't come together because the Senators nearly traded the 7th overall pick to thr Buffalo Sabres earlier in the day. According to multiple sources Buffalo had agreed to take on 75% of Murray's salary in exchange for swapping picks.
Garrioch confirms that Ottawa was set to trade Murray (25% retained) and the 7th pick to Buffalo for the 16th pick earlier today. Murray nixed that deal and Ottawa ultimately landed DeBrincat.
Luckily for the Senators, Murray decided he was unwilling to play for the Sabres and hours later the DeBrincat deal was completed.
Ottawa and Pierre Dorion should thank Murray because he likely saved multiple jobs within the organization.
