The Montreal Canadiens have seemingly hit the jackpot with un-drafted Costco employee turned rookie blueliner Arber Xhekaj. Now, it seems he's putting the rest of the league on notice.
According to Eric Engels of Sportsnet the rough and tumble defender has this to say after taking the Arizona Coyotes and veteran tough guy Zack Kassian last night.
If anybody wants to challenge me, I'm not going to back down. That's a big statement from.
Some might view this as arrogant or cocky, but I think this is a rookie who's had a story like no other and wants to stick around. If early season is any indication, Xhekaj isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
On the other hand, if the statement does anything it'll put a target on his back, something that has already been there over the past few games. Somehow, I think he'll be able to handle whatever comes just fine.
Xhekaj Is a blast from the past, Montreal should be cherishing every moment. He'll be a fan favourite before too long if he isn't already.
