New Jersey Devils sign a new winger, just not the one they'd hoped for

The New Jersey Devils were a favourite to land Johnny Gaudreau before he ultimately signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Devils then had to go to their Plan B, once they pivoted they were able to acquire two-time Stanley Cup Champion, Ondrej Palat.
Ondrej Palat is a steady middle six winger that can score timely goals. He even has a slightly better points per game percentage in the playoffs than he does in the regular season. A two-time Stanley Cup winner with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Palat brings a ton of experience to a young up and coming Devils team.
It's always risky giving a 31-year-old a 5-year contract as the last few years of the deal will be in his twilight years. This may be a panic move by the Devils to fill a roster spot but at least it didn't cost them $10 Million a year.
