This year's NHL Draft was a wild one. From all the chatter surrounding the potential trades of the top two picks, to the eventually choices. The Montreal Canadiens ultimately selected Juraj Slafkovsky 1st overall. Sources say that this threw the New Jersey Devils a bit of a curveball. The Devils didn't prepare for this selection and it threw them for a loop.
According to Pierre Lebrun on TSN1050:
A Devils source told me last night their guy was Slafkovsky and once the Habs took him New Jersey did think of moving down but obviously in that time frame didn't have time to get that done so they took their next best choice"
It's hard to believe that a team like the New Jersey Devils didn't think that Montreal would pick any other player other than Shane Wright. But it appears not only was Wright not 1st on the Habs scouting card, he wasn't even 2nd on the Devils.
