With all eyes on the Colorado Avalanche, Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers, the New York Rangers are also looking to take a serious run at the Stanley cup. Rangers' General Manager, Chris Drury made a handful of moves at the NHL Trade Deadline.
He acquired forwards Frank Vatrano, and Tyler Motte, but his most heralded move was the addition of Andrew Copp, from the Winnipeg Jets. Copp came to New York in exchange for prospect Morgan Barron and two conditional draft picks.
The 3 players have already had a very positive impact on their team and because of that it is believed the Rangers have varying levels of interest in extending all 3 men. But according to Elliotte Friedman, the Rangers have already begun contract talks with Andrew Copp:
The one that's believed to be already in talks, is Andrew Copp. Chris Drury really likes Copp and is looking to lock him up to a possible 4 or 5 year contract before Copp hits the free agent market.
Copp is that type of player that every team wants, Copp can contribute on the powerplay, penalty kill, and he can play all 3 forward positions. He has already provided a boost to the Rangers' lineup since his acquisition from the Jets and he will look to maintain his strong play in the hopes of securing a significant next contract.
Former Winnipeg Jets' Head Coach, Paul Maurice had this to say when asked about Copp's future:
Well, he's smart. So, he's trying to maximize his offensive game by being a really smart defensive player. That's his DNA. At the end of the day, his foundation is he doesn't make mistakes defensively and I'm talking year over year, there's just not a lot, from the very first game he played. He's seen less video than any player I've ever coached. He just got it and just loves to battle no matter the score he doesn't quit.
