After reading the facts that Macramalla posted, it's easy to see that the salary cap era has most teams in the league hand cuffed and unable to make any moves. On one hand, the cap has tried to make the league a more even as every team has to comply. That is the good part of the cap. However, it has to be frustrating for teams to find themselves stuck and not able to make the changes they'd like. As stated in the Twitter post, so many teams have over extended themselves. Its also boring for us fans to hardly see any trades nowadays. Conversely, if teams didn't make bad decisions and sign players to bad long-term contracts they might not be in this mess of a situation.
The bottom line is the salary cap era has ruined teams ability to make changes to their rosters quickly and essentially ruined the trade deadline altogether. Not only that, teams have used long-term injured reserve as a loop hole to manipulate the cap and to have better rosters come playoff time. Just see the Tampa Bay Lightning who have notoriously exposed a flaw in the salary cap world.
Every other sport in the world has blockbuster deals almost yearly, while the NHL has seen one true blockbuster in the last 5+ years.
What do you think? Is it time to adjust the salary cap era? Or should General Managers and Owners be held responsible for handing out ridiculous contracts and continue to be stuck with their rosters?
