Penguins considering buying out two forwards when final buyout window opens
When the Pittsburgh Penguins signed Kasperi Kapanen to a 2-year contract extension it pushed the team over the salary cap. By signing Kapanen and avoiding arbitration it also opens up a second 48 hour buyout window for the team. This buyout window could prove useful as multiple NHL teams are currently trying to move salary making it exceptionally difficult to get a move done.
According to Frank Seravalli of The Daily FaceOff, the Penguins could consider buying out either Jason Zucker or Marcus Pettersson.
With Kapanen re-signed, @CapFriendly now has #pens over the cap. There are options in October: Smith and O'Connor are both waiver exempt.
But with Kapanen's arb resolved, #pens also now have a 48-hour buyout window opening in 3 days. Zucker? Pettersson? Something to consider.
A buyout of Zucker would save the Penguins $3,500,000 this season, while a Pettersson buyout would save then approximately $2,500,000 this year.
With many depth options still on the market it will be interesting to see how the Penguins handle this market.
