Pittsburgh Penguins prospect nearly paralyzed after hit from behind, update on injuries

During a game today Kirill Tankov sustained a hit from behind that sent him crashing to the ice. The hit placed a large amount of energy on his back and neck that caused severe damage.

Now reports are beginning to surface of the severity of the injury. According to Match TV, Tankov narrowly missed becoming paralyzed on the play but he did suffer a fracture of the C5 vertebrae.

"Match TV" became aware of the shocking details of the injury of the foward "SKA-Neva" Kirill Tankov, which he received in the match of the regular championship of the VHL against "Dynamo" from St. Petersburg. The player was pushed in the back on board, and then he was taken to the hospital on a stretcher.

After the initial examination, doctors diagnosed a fracture of the cervical vertebra, presumably the fifth. With a high degree of probability, Tankov was out of action for a whole year.

On account of the 20-year-old Tankov 55 matches in the VHL, in which he scored 11 goals and gave 15 assists.

This injury just highlights how dangerous the game can be, given Tankov avoided being paralyzed by just millimeters. Tankov is expected to miss the entire season, but could see an even longer recovery from this injury.
