Referee reveals how much he was paid to perform awful opening faceoff speech
Tonight marked the first game of th 2022/23 regular season. The opening game on North American soil was held between the New York Rangers and Tampa Bay Lightning. Before the game even began veteran official, Chris Rooney was tasked with giving a pregame speech.
To our great players and our great fans, welcome to opening night of the 2022/23 NHL season. What better than this? Good luck to all players. Let's have a great season.
The speech left fans laughing and questioning why Gary Bettman felt this was necessary. We weren't the only one because apparently Victor Hedman took the time to talk to a mic'd up Chris Rooney about it.
When Hedman approaches Rooney let's him know that he was asked to make the speech and when Hedman asks how much he was paid for it, Rooney admits he still has to negotiate that. But the likely results? A lovely ESPN hat.
