Ron MacLean provides update on his relationship with Don Cherry after their fallout
Ron MacLean and Don Cherry had a very public fallout. After Cherry was fired from Hockey Night in Canada he was forced MacLean, his best friend to stand behind him. Instead MacLean crawled back and made a public apology throwing his friend under the bus.
Cherry, now 89, shared that the two previously had ended their friendship. In 2022 Cherry had the following to say about MacLean:
I don't think we'll ever be friends again.
According to updated reports though it appears that has changed. On a recent episode of the Bob McCowan podcast MacLean shared the following:
"The way we speak is I phone and then he usually phones back but you know, Don is not big on technology," MacLean said.
MacLean added that he and Cherry's former producer Kathy Broderick and Sportsnet coworker Kevin Bieksa phoned him from the NHL All-Star Game in Sunrise, Florida, this past February.
"We all sent greetings. And then I phoned him when Mayor Hazel McCallion, longtime mayor of Mississauga, passed, I offered to take Don to the funeral, but it would have been, you know, a bit of an event if he was there. So he asked not to. I phoned him again on June 1 on the anniversary of [Don's late wife] Rose's passing," MacLean added.
Ron would go onto share that their political views often wouldn't align, but shared the two never were consumed by that. This however feels like a last stitch effort by MacLean to try and win over the crowd he lost when he and Cherry had their fallout.
