San Jose Sharks and Patrick Marleau set to make major announcement
On May 6th, 2022 the San Jose Sharks, made an announcement in regards to the continuation of Patrick Marleau's career. Marleau is scheduled to make a public announcement next year about what comes next for the 20+ year veteran
According to the organization, Patrick Marleau on Tuesday will announce, what is expected to be his official retirement, as reported by Mercury News and TSN. The press conference for the Center will be held at the SAP Center on Tuesday the 10th.
Patrick Marleau decided to sit out the 2021-2022 season, after hitting the record for All-Time games played.
Marleau broke the record Gordie Howe previously held in the 2020-2021 extended season.
Speaking of context this is an impressive stat line:
Over his career, the 41-year-old Marleau has made 1,596 appearances with the Sharks, 164 with the Toronto Maple Leafs and an additional eight as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
During his almost quarter-century career, Marleau has 566 goals, 1,196 points, three All-Star appearances, and two Olympic gold medals for Canada in 2010 and '14.
Marleau won the respect of his opponents and peers for being consistent and being a productive player on the ice and, will bow out after being relevant with 21 seasons in the NHL.
There are some thoughts that Marleau will transition into a front office role with the Sharks as they are currently heavily engaged in a search for their next General Manager.
