Sean Monahan showed he's a great human after teammate suffers medical emergency
The National Hockey League is a business and as such, we sometimes forget that when a player gets traded or signs with a new team in free agency that those types of moves can be hard. I think sometimes, we look at a player's contract and think he makes too much, or he's a cap casualty, he was never worth what he was signed for. The latter is especially sad.
Two days ago, long-time member of the Calgary Flames, Sean Monahan was traded to the Montreal Canadiens in what was most certainly a cap dump in order to make room for Nazem Kadri. However, as Cami Kepke of Global News Calgary points out, Monahan meant more to the Flames than most remember.
Monahan gave his heart, soul, and health to the Flames.
Hopefully, a fresh start can rejuvenate his career out east.
In 2019, former Flame defender TJ Brodie collapsed during a team practice and was rushed to the hospital. Monahan took it upon himself to get off the ice and try to call Brodie's wife, Amber so she didn't have to find out on the internet. When that didn't work Monahan called his now wife to knock on Brodie's door and let her know.
Listen, I know hockey is a business. I know things happen and people have to do what's right for their teams and if that means moving longtime players, so be it, but the human element here is important. Sean Monahan gave all he could to the city of Calgary and the Flames organization during his 9-year tenure.
Take care of him Montreal, not only are you getting a valuable player, you're getting an even better person.
