The Arizona Coyotes and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman have been waiting patiently for the Tempe City Council to vote on the proposed new arena for the team. The new arena would provide the Coyotes a permanent home and hopefully give the franchise long-term viability. Unfortunately for Bettman and the franchise they didn't get the news they wanted.

Yesterday the Tempe City Council made it official and announced that they would not approve the facility. Instead they'd push that decision to the citizens of Tempe. This gives the residents impacted by the facility the final say on whether it will go forward or not.

The Tempe City Council has unanimously voted to send the Coyotes proposed hockey arena and entertainment district to referendum, residents will be able to vote in a special election in May. Had the opportunity to push it to August but decided on the earlier date.

The vote should align perfectly with the NHL playoffs and will allow the league to either begin plans for construction of the new arena or the relocation of the league's worst run franchise.
