The Carolina Hurricanes are set to open training camp on Thursday. Like many NHL teams, the Hurricanes are currently over the cap by $2,616,917. One way to mitigate this issue is to trade Ethan Bear and his $2,200,000 AAV.

Carolina appears to be gauging the trade market for Bear with teams like Vancouver, Chicago, and Ottawa interested in the defenceman.

The 25 year old. was selected 124th overall in the 2015 NHL Draft. In his first season with the Hurricanes he scored 5 goals and 14 points in 58 games while averaging 16:04 in ice time.

Carolina has seven defenceman under contract in Jaccob Slavin, Brent Burns, Brady Skjei, Brett Pesce, Dylan Coghlan, Jalen Chatfield, and Bear. They also have veteran defender Calvin De Hann on a PTO contract.

With so many quality defenders at their disposal and currently in a cap crunch, a Bear trade makes sense. I see a trade happening before the season starts with a pick or depth piece going the other way.
