Vancouver Canucks President rips the team's 'country club atmosphere'
Sportsnet hockey broadcaster Nick Kypreos shared where he thinks the Vancouver Canucks are at currently with Bob McCown and John Shannon on a recent episode of The Bob McCown Podcast. Kypreos expressed his belief that Canucks GM Jim Rutherford will do what he can to make significant changes to the team this summer.
«He's gonna make a splash, here. He doesn't like the room, guys. Thinks it's a country club in there. He's gonna change it up. What does that mean to Miller, what does that mean to Bo Horvat? Brock Boeser, he's not gonna pay. So there's gonna be a different look, within six months, with this team.» He knows it's broken. Jim has gone in there with a plan, he's taking his time with the plan,» Shannon said, «The two key dates for him are what he can do on the draft floor, on [July 7], with a couple of his star players, and then what he wants to do in free agency.
There's gonna be a core, there, of Pettersson and Hughes and Demko, and I'm not sure who else. And Horvat,»
Shannon added.
The Canucks finished fifth in the Pacific Division with a 403012 record. Vancouver had a very slow start to the season, former Head Coach Travis Green was fired in December and replaced by Bruce Boudreau. With Boudreau behind the bench Vancouver went 32-15-10 the rest of the way ultimately falling short on a playoff berth.
Vancouver has around $10,500,000 in cap space available. Rutherford will need to make decisions on sniper Brock Boeser who is a RFA with arbitration rights and find a goalie to share the workload with Thatcher Demko. Captain Bo Horvat and leading scorer J.T. Miller are UFAs after the 2022-2023 season.
The Canucks currently have all of their draft picks except their 2022 second-round pick and 2023 seventh round pick that they included in the Oliver Ekman-Larsson deal with the Arizona Coyotes last Summer.
Hockey Insiders had half the roster available for trade this season. The teams' engine JT Miller, Tenacious winger Conor Garland, Tanner Pearson, Nils Hoglander and Boeser are all available for the right offer this Summer. It will be interesting to see how many from the current roster will be back next season.
