Sergei Fedorov will go down as one of the best players of his generation in the NHL, but now he admits leaving the Red Wings was a major mistake.
The Detroit Red Wings are one of the most storied franchises in the NHL, and unlike other Original Six teams such as Montreal, New York and Toronto, that has meant plenty of success in the modern era.
That success in the 90's was led by an incredible group of Russians, with perhaps the best of all being Sergei Fedorov, who was a key part of the Stanley Cup runs for Detroit in 1997, 1998 and 2002.
However, he would depart the team in free agency in 2003, joining the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, and while he'd go on to have some solid years with them, Columbus and Washington, he was never truly the same star again.
Years later, the now 55-year old has admitted that was a major mistake, admitting this is what he would have done if he had his time over again:
Sign everything that Detroit offered and continue working calmly. Don't escalate the situation.
Ultimately though, the young centre was influenced by his agent, and in the end there was no deal for him to sign, with the move becoming a major regret for the superstar forward.
I finished it like this: 'I need to think about it. I named a time frame - two or three weeks.' But it all turned into months. I was a young man, not very knowledgeable about life. I also trusted the agents.
My agents kept saying that they could raise my salary. But nothing changed. At some point, I completely stopped understanding what was happening in my life. Playing hockey was my only outlet. And Detroit simply removed a new contract offer from the table.
Fedorov would end his career with 483 goals and 1,179 points in 1,248 games played, and while he never found the same success after leaving Detroit, he remains a legend of the franchise and one of the best players to ever pull on their iconic jersey.
