Ball hockey player brutally beats referee with stick
Time and time again it has been said that hockey is inherently dangerous. You take a risk every single time you're involved in a game, whether you are a player, referee or occasionally a coach or spectator. However, what happened recently at a ball hockey game was extremely dangerous and uncalled for.
The incident in question occurred in the province of Quebec and involved a ball hockey referee being brutally attacked by a player which he was overseeing as an official during a game in the Dek hockey league. The victim was struck multiple times with an opponent's stick after a verbal altercation. The results of the attack included a skull and jaw fracture, broken teeth and a concussion.
Incidents such as what happened in Quebec are becoming increasingly common at community rinks across Canada, North America and the world and it usually begins with a verbal interaction. While it's important to note that the authorities have been contacted and the alleged offending party has been spoken to, what does talking to someone accomplish?
After the incident, the National Ball Hockey Players Association released the following statement
«A tragedy happened yesterday,» the French statement read. «A referee who expelled a player from the match was attacked by the offending player. He received a stick blow to the chest followed by a stick blow (with both hands) directly to the face! The referee is seriously injured.»
The ball hockey association also announced that the player received a lifetime ban and wished the official a speedy recovery.
These sorts of incidents need to decrease and not increase, especially at club and rec levels. The majority of participants involved in games are playing because they love the sport and choose to remain active in the game by any means necessary.
