For the past three seasons, three-time Stanley Cup Champion and IIHF Hall of Famer Sergei Fedorov has been coaching CSKA Moscow of the KHL. His first two seasons couldn't have done any better, as he coached the team to back-to-back Gagarin Cup championships. However, Fedorov and CSKA suffered a first round exit in the KHL playoffs this season.
CSKA Moscow has announced the Fedorov will not return as head coach next season, and he's been replaced with Ilya Vorobyov.
Fedorov has long been rumoured to be connected with some type of role with the Detroit Red Wings, the NHL team he spent the bulk of his playing career with, and won his three Stanley Cups with. The news of his relationship with CSKA ending has already started up the rumour mill.
Fedorov's contract with CSKA expires on April 30. You can't help but wonder whether former teammate and current Red Wings Executive Vice president and General Manager Steve Yzerman will come calling.
