As the NHL gears up for a lawsuit over the death of Steve Montador, it wants the court to force his two ex-girlfriends to turn over any information they might have
Two ex-girlfriends of former NHLer Steve Montador may get dragged into a lawsuit involving the league and Montador's father.
As part of the lawsuit, which goes to trial in March of 2025, Paul Montador is accusing the NHL of profiting off of violence while not properly informing players of the risks involved.
Now, the NHL is asking the judge in the case to force two former girlfriends of Steve Montador to turn over any pertinent information they might have in the way of text messages and other forms of communication.
"The NHL wrote in court documents that one of the girlfriends was with Steve the night he died.
The other was his girlfriend in 2013 and was with him in Croatia when he allegedly sustained a brain injury while playing in the KHL, the NHL alleged, adding that woman regularly spoke with Steve's medical professionals about his mental and physical health."
Steve Montador took his own life in February of 2015 after suffering at least 11 documented concussions while playing hockey. The NHL has argued his death was the result of his "own lack of due care."
Steve's father Paul Montador states his son went through "thousands of sub-concussive brain traumas," as well as several undiagnosed or undocumented concussions outside the 11 that were known about.
The NHLPA recently took a stand against the league and revealed a new program advocating for players suffering from CTE as a result of brain injuries.
The NHL, meanwhile, continues to dispute any link between hockey and CTE brain disease.
