Ryan Johansen, who was dropped from his contract by the Philadelphia Flyers for what the team called a material breach, is firing back at the allegations. He's had the NHL Player's Association file a grievance on his behalf.
Ryan Johansen was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers from the Colorado Avalanche at the trade deadline last season, and immediately put on waivers. The Flyers were hoping another team would pick him up for nothing, or he would be sent to the AHL. Once the 24 hour waiver period had passed, it was discovered that Johansen had in injury and was not eligible to the transferred, which meant he remained on the main roster for the rest of the season. Over the summer, Johansen was placed on waivers again, this time for the purposes of contract termination.
Ryan Johansen's agent said at the time the contract termination would be contested, and the NHLPA today announced an official grievance has been filed.
The Philadelphia Flyers have never said what led to the "material breach" they claim Ryan Johansen was involved in. The 32-year-old former fourth overall draft pickl had one year remaining on his contract that carried a cap hit of $8 million which would have been evenly split between the Flyers and the Nashville Predators, who had agreed to retain 50 percent of his salary in a previous trade. Johansen has more than 900 NHL games under his belt, and has 578 career points (202 G, 376 A). He is currently considered an unrestricted free agent. He began his career with the Columbus Blue Jackets before a trade to the Nashville Predators in 2016.
