Mikko Rantanen Will Leave The Carolina Hurricanes in the Summer, Per Paul Bissonnette
According to the co-host of the Spittin' Chiclets podcast and former NHLer Paul Bissonnette, Mikko Rantanen will leave the Carolina Hurricanes this summer.
The Mikko Rantanen trade from the Colorado Avalanche to the Carolina Hurricanes in return for Jack Drury and Martin Necas has been widely discussed, but what hasn't been mentioned a lot was the risk factor in the deal.
In most trades, teams receiving the best player end up "winning" the trade, but in this case, it could be a lot different.
Last year, the Canes traded for Jake Guentzel and paid a hefty price for him. Unfortunately, they couldn't reach a deal with him for a contract, and the player left for the Tampa Bay Lightning.
This could be exactly what happened with Rantanen in Carolina.
Paul Bissonnette talked about that issue in the latest Spittin' Chiclets episode. He stated that Carolina won't be able to keep him next summer.
He raised the fact that while this is his hot take, the Canes will end up having sent Necas and Drury for a three-month rental because the player will ask for too much money.
In his own words:
"I don't think Carolina's going to be able to afford to keep him. They ain't going to be able to frontload ayou're getting a three-month rental."
"Mind you, if he doesn't sign in Carolina, which by the way is my hot take, I don't think that he's going to sign in Carolina. I think there's not a chance that he's going to sign in Carolina."
"This was clearly about money, was it not? Because if it wasn't about money, he'd (Rantanen) be playing with the big three."
What Biznasty didn't take into consideration was the fact that the NHL salary cap is set to rise in the coming years, which could help the Canes reach a deal with Rantanen.
Fans surely hope that the team will avoid repeating the same mistake that cost them Jake Guentzel.
