Brawl breaks out after player gets punched during the handshake line
What started out as a competitive game between two teams ended in absolute chaos. The two teams played a close game, which ended in a 4-3 shootout victory. Fans in attendance enjoyed the U18 game, but it's what happened after the game that is drawing all the headlines.
As the two teams took part in the customary handshake line one player loses his cool throwing a punch to the head of another player. That's when things devolved into mayhem. Both teams began throwing punches and the situation devolved to coaches trying to separate their players.
Multiple players and coaches have been suspended by the league for unsportsmanlike conduct and for obtaining fighting majors. The league issued the following statement:
An unfortunate incident occurred between two EFHL teams this past weekend. EFHL Officials and staff are working through referees reports provided to ensure all players who participated in the events post game receive the appropriate sanctions. This is not tolerated in the EFHL.
The game sheet shows how penalties were handed out accordingly.
This is disappointing for everyone involved. Despite our love for rough play, we hate seeing the lack of sportsmanship and respect these players showed one and other.
