2024 IIHF World Junior Championships is set to kick off on on December 26th with Canada set to face off with Finland to open the tournament.

There has been much speculation whether NHL teams will release any of their age eligible talent to help out Canada's roster. Canada left one spot open when announcing its roster last week hoping an NHL team would do them a favor.

The Boston Bruins have assigned forward Matt Poitras to Team Canada for the world junior hockey championship, the NHL team announced Monday.

The 19 year old has played in 27 games this season scoring 5 goals and 13 points while averaging 14:06 in ice time with the Bruins.

Hockey analyst Pierre McGuire believes Poitras going to the World Juniors will be wonders for the young Bruins career.

«I've been around the World Juniors since 1989; it doesn't stifle players, it only helps them,» McGuire said. «If you watch Matt Poitras play right now, he's not nearly comfortable enough playing in an NHL environment. He's not strong enough on the puck; he's not strong enough on the backcheck; he used to dominate the puck below the hash marks, but he's not doing that anymore, and you can see defensively, he's getting pushed around; he's getting roughed up."
