Canadian Tire Centre has been home to the Ottawa Senators since 1996 when they hosted their first game against the Montreal Canadiens on January 17th. 1996. Now shy of thirty years later there is word that the Senators and the National Capital Commission could announce as early as this week that the team has secured land at the LeBreton flats.
With the deadline for a lease agreement on a piece of land closing in, sources have reported that a deal will get done sooner rather than later. While this is just the first step in a long list of things that need to happen before anything becomes a reality, it's plausible to assume that all systems are a go and shovels could be in the ground faster than anyone thinks. If everything is a go, the team could be playing at a new arena in time for the 2030 National Hockey League season.
The CTC had quite a bit of promise when it was built originally but unfortunately, it was built in the wrong part of town, in the middle of nowhere, which posed problems such as fans trying to get to it from afar. With the new location being right downtown and minutes from Parliament, The Senators are primed to have an arena which can be better accessed by more people as it's in a more central location.
Senators owner Michael Andlauer who bought the team in June of 2023 was given a twelve-month extension to study the feasibility of building a new rink and negotiating a deal by NCC chief executive officer Tobi Nussbaum. It now seems that most if not all the things which Andlauer has envisioned and made known will come to fruition and the team will remain in Ottawa for years to come.
