Eric Lindros has opened up and given his thoughts on Cutter Gauthier refusing to play for the Philadelphia Flyers, the team Lindros spent most of his NHL career with.
Lindros also knows a thing or two about being traded after refusing to play for a team. He was picked first overall by the Quebec Nordiques in 1991 despite signaling he wouldn't sign with the team, which was the catalyst for his trade to Philadelphia. Cutter Gautheir recently did the same to Philadelphia, and was traded to the Anaheim Ducks for defenceman Jamie Drysdale. Lindros said the team never should have let Gautheir's trade request be made public.
Lindros insisted Philadelphia is a great place to play, but didn't blame Gauthier at all for his trade demand.
"I had a great time in Philly," said Lindros. "But if he thinks he's going to have a better time someplace else, then go for it. It's a player's right. The better the city and the organization treats a guy, the more it's going to attract guys. That's a big part of it." The Hockey News Gautheir's refusal to play for the Philadelphia Flyers landed him and his family death threats, something that never should have happened, regardless of the way fans felt. Again, Lindros stressed that's on the Flyers.
""(The Flyers should) accentuate that you got a player you coveted. But you don't mention the guy who didn't want to go to your team."
