While the 2024/25 season in the NHL has started in incredible fashion, there are plenty of people looking forward to the summer of 2025, with many huge free agency decisions likely to change the landscape of the league.
Two of those players are Mikko Rantanen and Mitch Marner, both of whom will get well over $10 million AAV on their next deals, with both of their current teams favoured to retain them in free agency, but not without a huge cost.
With both teams expected to contend for a Stanley Cup, moving either of them is out of the question for both Toronto and Colorado, but if something drastic changes, anything can happen in the NHL.
Now, the latest edition of NHL on TNT has brought out a wild trade proposal, with the simply suggestion to, one for one, swap the two right now.
Thankfully, Paul Bissonnette, who is famously a huge supporter of the Maple Leafs on his Spittin' Chiclets podcast, was the voice of reason in this scenario, shooting down the wild trade proposal in the most simple terms possible:
On paper, if neither are going to be re-signed, a deal wouldn't be the worst thing to happen for both teams, but with both Marner and Rantanen expected to at least hear out long-term offers from their teams, it certainly won't ever come close to being a possibility.
At this point, both Colorado and Toronto will be looking to be buyers at the trade deadline, and while it's no guarantee that one or both will be back in free agency, the teams appear ready to take that risk.
