Going into the 2023 NHL Draft, Adam Fantilli was long projected to be the second overall pick, behind the generational talent of Connor Bedard. Surprisingly, Fantilli fell the third overall after being passed on by Anaheim in favour of Leo Carlsson. Already, Fantilli is making the Blue Jackets proud, and could be making the Ducks second guess their decision.
Fantilli played with the Blue Jackets' in another rookie team tournament against the Red Wings, Fantilli scored a highlight reel go. Coming through the offensive zone and sleekly dekeing through two defenders, Fantilli ripped a backhand shot off the crossbar and in for his first goal in the Blue Jackets' system.
It's only a rookie tournament game, against quality of competition much lesser than the NHL, but Fantilli could prove to be an incredible pick up for the Blue Jackets after falling to third overall. Now, Fantilli may be fighting for a roster spot this season through the team's training camp, beginning next week.
The Blue Jackets season will open at home against the Flyers on October 12th, potentially with Fantilli in the lineup. With a young team full of talent under the coaching of Mike Babcock, the Jackets could be an interesting team to watch for the first time in many years.
