During the Los Angeles Kings and Edmonton Oilers game last night there was an altercation between Connor McDavid and Alexander Edler. As McDavid had possession of the puck he began to skate over the Kings blueline. Alex Edler stood up to McDavid and knocked him down to the ice. During the hit, it looked like there was contact between Edler's knee and McDavid's knee. After the initial hit, McDavid stayed down on the ice for a moment.

Edmonton defenseman Darnell Nurse took exception to Edler's hit and immediately came after him. It wasn't much of a fight because the linesman had was between both skaters. As McDavid got up, he skated towards the Los Angeles bench and he had some words for the Kings team.

Elder did not receive a five minute major on this play and the hit did not seem that it was intending to injury anyone. It was two players competing at a high level of play. Playing McDavid physical is about all you can do to slow him down these days. He is so fast and difficult to defend. It was also good to see McDavid was not injured on the play and to see Edmonton standup for their superstar center.

Edler has a history of causing serious knee injuries and likely doesn't receive the benefit of the doubt after this hit either. Edler's reputation dates all the way back to his time in Vancouver and even during time representing Team Sweden.
