Alex Ovechkin convinces referee to cancel a penalty
Alex Ovechkin has done a lot of amazing things in his career, but last night it appears he still accomplished another first. There are few players who respect the game the way Ovechkin does and last night he proved that all over again.
On a play during the first period, it appears that Alex Ovechkin is pulled down by Max Pacioretty as he tries to skate by. But almost immediately as Ovechkin hits the ice he sees and referee's arm go up and he begins pleading his case. The play is immediately blown dead with Vegas in possession of the puck.
It seemed pretty cut and dry that Patches would be getting a penalty, but Ovechkin continued to explain to the official that he'd simply fallen and not been tripped on the play.
The referee ultimately announced there was no penalty on the play. It's amazing to see the level of respect Ovechkin has for the game and how much respect the officials have for Ovi. This is how hockey should be played.
