Auston Matthews refuses to talk about his contract, gives very short answer when asked if he want to stay
Yesterday Nathan MacKinnon signed the largest contract in NHL history and like us usually the case, things immediately turned to how does this impact the Toronto Maple Leafs. With the opening of training camp, the media vultures were all over Auston Matthews and they wanted to know about his future in Toronto. Matthews has 2 years remaining on his current contract, but is eligible for a contract extension next summer.
To avoid having to answer these questions every day Matthews took a single question about his contract and made sure to let everyone know that he WON'T be doing this again.
I want to be clear about the contract stuff. I'm going to touch on it today and that's it. I'm focused on the season and we'll deal with it then. I love playing here, I consider it home now.
Last season Matthews became the NHL's first 60 goal scorer in the last decade. He went onto win both the Hart Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award for being the league's most valuable player. If Matthews continues with that sort of performance it won't be surprising to see him fetch $14,000,000+ per season on his next deal. Unless he's willing to take a team friendly deal like MacKinnon.
