While it's only still an option for Trotz, and it's unclear if Detroit has made a formal offer, it'd certainly be surprising for such a highly touted coach to take over a rebuilding team. Detroit took some steps of improvement last year with their young core players having breakout seasons, but they still have a long way to go before they're considered Stanley Cup contenders, let alone playoff contenders.
Perhaps Trotz sees himself as proving a stabilizing presence to the young Detroit core including Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond, able to shepherd them towards their full potential. Additionally, the allure of Steve Yzerman as the General Manager ensures that the team will be competitive in coming years, and that Yzerman has the ability to build a contender.
It's also been reported that Trotz turned down the biggest coaching contract in NHL history from the Philadelphia Flyers, and is also considering taking an executive position with his former team in Nashville. From those pieces of information, we can gather that Trotz isn't chasing money or an instant shot at winning the cup; Instead that he'd rather commit to a team he believes will grow into a contender, and where he believes he can help build that team.
