To free-up space, they have a few options as far as forwards go.
Nick Foligno has been a contributor to past successes in Columbus, but it seems like his time in Boston should be put under the microscope. Foligno has evolved into a "character guy" for the Bruins.
He has put up 17 points in the past 2 seasons and suffered injuries in Boston and Toronto unfortunately. It seems like he would benefit from moving him to a team that isn't trying to compete, and serving as a mentor.
Moving Foligno would save the Bruins $3.8 Million on the cap and help secure Zacha past 2022-2023. The only issue being the likely cost attached to moving Foligno.
The next option would be Craig Smith, the 3rd line winger is a good depth piece but if you're bringing back the captain it would be smart of Sweeney to move him. What team doesn't need a 30+ point forward?
Smith spent the majority of his NHL career in Nashville and was a consistent contributor. Move him for assets, despite Don Sweeney's mismanagement if you can get a future and relieve another $3.1 Million, you can secure Krejci, Zacha, and Bergeron for at least 1 year.
The question is will Don Sweeney continue to move as he has in the past? Recklessly? Or will he look to be more pointed with his long-term planning?
Every move Sweeney makes must be made with the thought of keeping David Pastrnak in a Bruins jersey for years to come.
