If you thought the NHL had finally gotten beyond the point of postponing games, not so fast. Today the NHL announced that tomorrow's game between the Winnipeg Jets and Seattle Kraken would be postponed. This would mark the first game postponed since the NHL's return from the COVID shutdown.

The league announced the following in a press release:

Tomorrow night's game between the Seattle Kraken and Winnipeg Jets at Canada Life Centre has been postponed due to expected extreme weather conditions in Winnipeg beginning later today. The game has been rescheduled for Sunday, May 1, at 1 p.m. CT. The decision to postpone the game at this time was made in order to minimize the potential disruption to the regular-season schedule in the event the severe weather that is expected to hit the Winnipeg area were not only to force cancellation of tomorrow night's game, but also prevents timely and necessary post-game travel, including, specifically, the Jets' ability to travel for their game in Florida on Friday, April 15.

There is currently a Winter Storm Warning for the Winnipeg area as Environment Canada has released the following information:

Major spring storm poised to wallop southern Manitoba beginning overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning and lasting until Friday morning. Widespread snowfall accumulations of 30-50 cm accompanied by northerly winds gusting 60-70 km/h giving zero visibility at times in snow and blowing snow.

The good news is this postponement isn't COVID related, but the bad news is we will likely have to endure at least one extra meaningless game once the NHL season was supposed to officially end.
