Salary caps around major sports leagues are hard to get a grasp on, but in particular the National Hockey League flat salary cap is a fickle beast to tackle and is much harder to grasp then most.

What if I told you the NHL Salary cap is worth more per day than it was last season? Makes no sense right? However, PuckPedia explains how that's possible.

This upcoming season has 15 less days for cap purposes because there's no Olympic beak. This means, each «cap day» is worth more than it was last year. Which means when teams accrue cap space this year, it's worth more than it was last season.

This also means teams attempting to accrue cap space for deadline moves don't have the same benefits as it did last year. That's explained here:

This could be good for competitive balance across the league and it might stop some teams from circumventing the cap exactly the way they have in years past. With every year however, teams get more and more creative at blurring the lines between what is «legal» and what is not. We shall see how this plays out next season
