Department of Player Safety announces punishment for Kurtis MacDermid
Last night during the Colorado Avalanche versus Minnesota Wild game, Kurtis MacDermid delivered a hit that left Marcus Foligno in significant pain. On the play it appeared that MacDermid attempted to deliver a clean check, but Foligno appeared to move causing a knee-on-knee collision.
Today the league announced the following punishment for MacDermid.
Colorado's Kurtis MacDermid has been fined $2,187.50, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for Kneeing Minnesota's Marcus Foligno.
While many feel that this punishment doesn't fit the crime, upon review it does appear MacDermid lines up for a legal check. On this play Foligno is legally allowed to be checked, but Foligno's movement changes the trajectory of the hit. MacDermid is responsible for controlling the hit, but this fine feels like the appropriate punishment.
