On Saturday the East Coast of Canada was struck by the most powerful Hurricane in Canadian History. Hurricane Fiona made landfall as a Category 3 storm and left the entire province without power. After decimating Nova Scotia the storm moved onto Newfoundland and Labrador, where storm surge did incredible damage.

This storm impacted thousands and on Monday we learned it hit very close to home for one member of the Ottawa Senators. Batherson, 24, revealed that the storm directly impacted his family. More specifically the storm destroyed the home of his Great Aunt and Uncle, after the home was swept into the ocean.

Batherson shared the following with the Ottawa Sun

My family in Port-Aux-Basque got hit hard. My great aunt and uncle lost their house into the ocean. My thoughts and prayers are with my family in Port-Aux-Basque and everybody in that town and all my family across Newfoundland.

Batherson's family was able to escape the home with the family pets before it was swept into the ocean. Despite being born in the United States, Batherson was raised in Newfoundland. He spent time in the Port-Aux-Basque area as a child.

I used to go there as a kid with my grandfather salmon fishing so I'm very familiar with the spot.

I've seen a lot of the videos from the area and it's really tough to watch. The houses in Port-Aux-Basque have probably been there for over a hundred years and I recognize some of the areas that got hit from being there as a kid.

Images of the storm have been shared widely online and show the extreme damage sustained by the area. At this time there is only one confirmed death from the storm, but multiple homes were completely lost.

Our thoughts go out to everyone impacted by this storm.
