When Jonathan Huberdeau was traded from the Florida Panthers to the Calgary Flames during the off-season for Matthew Tkachuk among others, it sent shock waves through the National Hockey League. Not only was the trade and return unexpected, but Huberdeau always thought he was a Panther lifer. When that trade call came, he wasn't too kind.
According to recently retired NHL defensemen, Keith Yandle on the spittin' chicklets podcast said he spoke to Huberdeau shortly after the trade. This is what he has to say.
When Panthers GM Bill Zito made the call, Huberdeau simply replied f*** you'.
Honestly what else can you expect from him? Huberdeau had just come off a record breaking, career defining year in Florida and then he gets traded? I'd be mad too.
Huberdeau, 29, put up 30 goals and 85 assists for a total of 115 points last season. Breaking the single season assist record in the process.
Huberdeau should be motivated playing his old team next season and beyond, and I'd guess that the resentment of how he was treated will light the fire inside him for a long time to come. It'll be interesting to watch Florida take on Calgary this season.
