The speculation surrounding Timo Meier is only heating up with the trade deadline just a few weeks away, one insider has linked Meier to an unlikely team.
According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet on the 32 thoughts podcast, the Toronto Maple Leafs may be emerging as a suitor for the San Jose Sharks star, take a look:
There are teams out there who think that Toronto at the very least has considered do we go get Meier for this run and then sort it out later
We bring him in, we see how this goes, see who has a good playoff and who doesn't, and we figure this out in June
Meier, 26, has skated in 53 games for the Sharks this season, notching a total of 51 points, including 30 goals and 21 assists.
I have to be honest here, Meier as a Leaf would make them a more formidable force going into the players, but I don't think this happens. Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas doesn't want to give up major assets for a rental. Now Friedman does also mention if Toronto acquires him, he's not necessarily mean he's a rental, but I just don't see it.
It would be nice to see Dubas swing for the fences once, but I don't know if they're willing to pay the price.
With the March 3rd trade deadline around the corner, only time will tell.
