Rumors began to circulate earlier this week that the New York Rangers were interested in trading forward Ryan Reaves. This news surfaced after Reaves had been a healthy scratch in 4 of the last 5 games for the Rangers. It was initially reported that the Rangers wanted to clear his cap space.

Then yesterday the news broke that Reaves had been traded to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for a draft pick. Hours after the trade news began to leak that there was more to the trade than meets the eye.

According to the New York Post's Mollie Walker, Reaves' agent, Kevin Epp, asked Rangers GM Chris Drury for a trade while the team was in Los Angeles earlier this week.

The Rangers freed up Reaves $1.75 million contract, giving them just under $2 million in overall salary cap space, as of today, according to CapFriendly.

At the trade deadline this savings will translate into over $6,000,000 in cap space for the Rangers, which they will be able to use to make significant deadline moves. Reaves who is in the last year of his contract will look to make an immediate impact for the Wild as he fights for a new contract.
