Last week the Vancouver Canucks announced they'd signed JT Miller to an 7-year contract extension. The deal is set to pay Miller $8,000,000 per season until he's 37-years-old. Miller's new deal comes with a full no movement clause for the first 4 years of the deal and a modified no trade clause for the final 3 seasons.

Yesterday during the team's press conference announcing the new deal, Canucks General Manager made a surprising comment about Miller and his deal.

#Canucks GM Patrik Allvin says the club didn't backtime JT Miller's no-trade clause to include this next season, but the intention is to have Miller here for the long run.

In recent years teams have made it a habit to add additional trade protection to a current contract for players. Meaning that a player who signs an extension before the final year of their deal has additional trade protection.

During his press conference Alvin did mention the team intends to keep Miller long-term, but this is a very interesting wrinkle to consider if the Canucks stumble early and fall out of playoff contention. This move clearly sets the Canucks up to protect themselves should the rumored problems in the dressing arise once again.
