The playoffs are the most physical style of hockey in the NHL. Every player ramps up their intensity and playing consistently against the same team often leads to some renewed rivalries. The Minnesota Wild and St. Louis Blues have been competing in the Central Division for home ice for the entire season, so it's not surprise that it didn't take long for things to get heated between the two teams.

Late in the 3rd period with the Blues leading the game 4-0, Minnesota Wild defender Jared Spurgeon let his emotions get the best of him. With Pavel Buchnevich on his knees on the ice, Spurgeon delivered a cross-check directly to Buchnevich's ankle. The strong downward blow was an extremely dangerous play and could have seriously injured Buchnevich.

This cross-check is not a hockey play, and in no way could Buchnevich have protected himself from this play. The play occured with less than 2-minutes remaining in the game and Spurgeon was issued a 2-minute minor.

We will see today if the NHL feels a play like this requires supplemental discipline.
