Last season the Toronto Maple Leafs looked to have the team that could finally get past the first round of the playoffs and do some real damage. They Leafs were led by Auston Matthews and his 60 goals.
Unfortunately it wasn't meant to be as the Leafs fell in another heartbreaking Game 7 at the hands of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Along with the loss came the departure of Leaf's goaltender Jack Campbell who signed with the Edmonton Oilers in free agency. This summer the Leafs also traded backup goalie Pete Mrazek to the Chicago Blackhawks, leaving them to rebuild their entire goalie tandem.
Kyle Dubas opted to acquire Matt Murray from the Ottawa Senators in a trade before signing Ilya Samsonov during Free Agency. However, if the Leafs goaltending situation doesn't hold up it appears Kyle Dubas already has a plan B.
According to FanSided's Editor in Leaf , don't be surprised to see Dubas make a run at Winnipeg Jet's goaltender, Connor Hellebuyck if Murray and Samsonov falter.
Hellebuyck, who has a Vezina, is 29 years-old, and has a contract of just over $6 million for each of the next two seasons, is a perfect candidate for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
He is cheap, he is not signed long-term, and his current team is garbage and doesn't look to be getting any better before he is an unrestricted free-agent asking for nine or ten million per season.
The Winnipeg Jets, like the Islanders, are in possession of a goalie who is going to price himself out of town before they can ice a contender around him. The obvious move is to cash in, and, should Matt Murray not pan out, look for the Toronto Maple Leafs to try and make a move in this direction.
Kyle Dubas is well aware that his job is likely on the line and it sounds like the General Manager won't allow goaltending to be the cause of his collapse this year. With preliminary talks already completed if things head south, Dubas and the Leafs are likely to act swiftly.
