No fan ever goes to a hockey game to watch the linesman or referees, often when a fan is focused on these men it's for the wrong reasons. But every once and awhile an official captivates fans or does their job so admirably they get acknowledged for it. That's exactly what happened for Dan Schachte.

Schachte was an incredible official who had a career that spanned over 30 years. Schachte began his career on October 1, 1982 in the old Chicago Stadium. On January 3, 2004, Schachte worked his 1,500th game in St. Louis, Missouri in a match between the St. Louis Blues and the San Jose Sharks. Schachte officiated his final game in on March 18, 2012 between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Washington Capitals.

Schachte finished his career with 2,009 career games officiated. This made him the first American born official to ever achieve the 2,000 game plateau.

Today former NHL official Tim Peel announced the sad news of Schachte's passing:

Very sad day. Dan Schachte passed away early this morning. Dan was the first American official to work over 2000 games. Olympics, Stanley Cup Finals, an incredible career. I had the pleasure of working the 2009 Outdoor game at Wrigley Field with him. 🙏 to Kim and his children.

Our condolences go out to the Schachte family during this difficult time.
