The Los Angeles Kings have had a very inconsistent beginning to their season. The Kings currently sit 3rd in the Pacific Division with a 13-9-4 record. This positioning has to be considered a success, especially due to the terrible goaltending they've received.

The team's goaltending was so poor that General Manager, Rob Blake, opted to waive 28-year-old goalie, Cal Petersen .This past summer Petersen signed a 3-year contract worth $5,000,000 per season. Petersen passed through waivers without being claimed and has since been sent to the AHL to find his game.

According to Blake, this was not meant to send a message to the team, but to give Petersen a chance to get more reps in to help the big club down the road in the future.

Cal can go back to the American League, play in games and get that get structure we believe in then come back and help us, That was the reason behind the decision.

We didn't do it for a message. We did it to help Cal and get him in a situation to play in games and we believe he is a good goalie and we believe he is going to come back here and help.

But while Blake felt like this wasn't to send a message to his team, his Head Coach, Todd McLellan felt much differently. When McLellan was asked if this was a message to his entire team, he replied differently than his General Manager.

Yes. ... Can it send a message to the team? It damn well should. Because we share in that transaction. All of us do.

King's defender Drew Doughty also felt that his group's defense was what truly failed Petersen. Doughty taking accountability for this shows true leadership, but should also send a message to his teammates.
