Matt Murray's agent refuses to comment on the player's status when asked about him
Last week the Toronto Maple Leafs made the announcement that Matt Murray would be placed on long-term injured reserve before the start of next season. The announcement came as no surprise to many as it was assumed the Maple Leafs would try some sort of salary cap shenanigans. Especially after they didn't even try to trade Murray at the draft like was expected.
Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet later confirmed that the injury would be doing on LTIR "for the 2023-24 season".
As expected, TOR announces Matt Murray will be going on LTIR for the 2023-24 season.
This was immediately assumed to be salary cap circumvention. While fans are still calling for an investigation, James Mirtle of The Athletic reached out to Murray's representative at Octagon, who chose not to comment.
Murray's agent, Octagon's Robert Hooper, hasn't responded to request for comment, getting detailed perspective from the player's side is a bit of a dead end here.
This refusal to comment will likely only fuel the fire of fan backlash. However, the NHL has stayed that the league reviews all paperwork associated to players on LTIR, and holds the rights to request additional information at any time.
It's unlikely fans get the answers they want, but the Matt Murray situation continues to get stranger.
