NHL Insider reveals how much Auston Matthews next contract will cost and it's more than you'd think
Nathan MacKinnon will become the highest paid player in NHL history when he takes the ice for the 2023-2024 season. This summer Mackinnon signed a deal to pay him $12,600,000 per season starting next year. But it's likely he won't be the highest paid player for long, because Auston Matthews will be looking for an extension of his own to start the following season.
There have been numerous rumors that Matthews could be interested in leaving Toronto for another market, but insider Frank Seravalli doesn't think that's the case. Seravalli feels that Matthews will sign a max term extension with the Leafs, but it will be for a HUGE cap hit.
In his recent Daily Faceoff piece, Frank Seravalli predicted that the Leafs will sign Matthews to an eight-year, $133.6 million ($16.7 million AAV) contract extension on July 1st, 2023.
A $16,700,000 cap hit would not only be the highest paid player in the league it would likely significantly hamper the Leafs attempts to sign William Nylander or Mitch Marner who would both also be requiring new contracts during the same time. With the salary cap set to rise the Leafs would likely have some additional cap space, but this deal might be the only way the Leafs could get a deal with their star done.
