NHL Player Safety makes decision on punishment for Milan Lucic after hit on Mike Smith
Milan Lucic drew immediate criticism for his 3rd period hit on Mike Smith. The referees on the ice awarded Lucic a 5-minute major for his hit. After the game Darryl Sutter chose to downplay the hit.
Today the NHL Department of Player Safety has made their decision on the hit. According to Emily Kaplan of The Athletic the NHL made the following decision.
Hearing there will be no supplemental discipline coming for Milan Lucic.
This is the right call by the league as even the major penalty was excessive especially because Lucic elected to slow up on the play.
To steal a comment from Darryl Sutter...can you imagine if he did want to hit him?
