NHL reportedly banned from ever returning to the Czech Republic until Gary Bettman is fired
The Nashville Predators and San Jose Sharks kicked off the NHL season with two games in the Czech Republic. The games were thoroughly enjoyed by everyone in attendance, but now it appears not everyone supported the action. So much so that according to former NHL Star, Dominik Hasek, the NHL is banned from ever returning.
Before the games the Czech Republic government took a stance that no Russian players would be allowed to play in the global showcase. But both the Sharks and Predators claimed that if their entire teams were not allowed entry, that they'd refuse to play. Ultimately the government agreed to allow the Russian players access, but they apparently won't be willing to do it again.
Hasek took to his Twitter account to share the following information today:
During the weekend 2 @NHL games were played in Prague. The leadership of the NHL did not respect the position of our MFA that Russian players should not play. Until the current leaders of the NHL resign and the new apologize to our country, the NHL is no longer welcome in the ČR
Hasek has been a staunch support of the Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict. Now it appears he and Czech Republic have taken a hardline stance against the NHL. This decision could impact Gary Bettman's attempts to grow the game internationally.
